Reserva Achalay and Aves Argentinas Strengthen the Safeguarding of the Paraná Delta

At Reserva Achalay, we are pleased to announce a collaboration agreement with Aves Argentinas, aimed at advancing our environmental management plan and establishing a biodiversity baseline for the nature reserve. Specialists from Aves Argentinas will be leading this work, in coordination with other institutions committed to the protection of the Paraná Delta.

This achievement was made possible thanks to funds made available to BirdLife International by Universal Pictures and Anya Taylor-Joy, enabling concrete actions to safeguard one of the country’s key and most threatened wetlands.

Reserva Achalay is located in the first section of islands in the Lower Paraná Delta, just 8 kilometers from the Port of Tigre and 22 kilometers from Buenos Aires City. Covering approximately 160 hectares, the land was acquired in 1991 for conservation purposes and today protects marshlands and aquatic plant communities typical of the lower delta, home to a remarkable diversity of native flora and fauna.

Bounded by the Río de la Plata to the east and south, the Río San Antonio to the west, and the Arroyo Pirañá to the north, the Reserve was formally established in 2015. That same year, we joined the Azara Foundation’s Private Nature Reserve Program, became part of the Argentine Network of Private Nature Reserves, and consolidated our partnership with Aves Argentinas.

Private nature reserves, like Achalay, play a strategic role by complementing public protected lands and providing tangible opportunities for conservation and sustainable development.

“The Paraná Delta is one of the principal wetlands in the country (Argentina), and its conservation requires coordinated commitment among the public sector, private organizations, and civil society. This agreement with Reserva Achalay demonstrates the value of partnerships to advance concrete actions in conservation, learning, and environmental education,” said Hernán Casañas, Executive Director of Aves Argentinas.

Through this initiative, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting the Paraná Delta wetlands, a unique and highly threatened ecosystem, and continue to strengthen our efforts to conserve its biodiversity. At Reserva Achalay, we believe that collaboration is the most effective tool to safeguard our natural heritage, and this agreement is a clear example of that.
